This is a steep-ass learning curve.
I thought that if I provided gravel/slate in the bottom of an enclosed container, that overwatering wouldn't be an issue as it would gather there and let the soil drain. Well, I have now learned, through the almost certain loss of The Simpsons (Sempervivium) and R2D2 (Echeveria), that this is not the case.
The enclosed container also encourages the retention of residual moisture, you see... so without a drainage hole of some description which also allows for aeration, that moisture builds up and will rot your succulents.
So now, the Simpsons (minus two chicks) and what's left of R2 are sitting in dry succulent mix in the hopes that their roots will equilibrate and they might live. The leaves that fell off R2 are in the propagator on dry soil and if they don't just rot I hope they will sprout roots at some point so I don't have to buy a whole replacement plant.
I've also asked my dad to come and drill holes in a few old coffee cups so that I can use them as planters without risking the lives of my planties.
So sad :(
