Closed Terrarium Systems

I love the look of these, I mean have you seen the bottle garden that hasn't been touched in 40 years? Incredible stuff!

17th September 2020: I have been idly eyeing up how to make and care for one of these, and I decided to try a bioactive one (with lil bugs to help keep mold at bay, etc, replicating a whole ecosystem in miniature). I've got stuff on order for it, and am really looking forward to the build! Making two small-ish ones initially, and if they work then I'll make a bigger one as well. The small ones will then go to new homes as gifts for Xmas - so they'd best bloody work out.

I have an aesthetic in mind, of course. Different themes for different terrariums, but they will all have pretty (and safe) lights in them. I've been collecting but not naming plants because they are destined to go inside one of these babies.

Will hopefully get started on this project in the next week. Much excite!

18th September 2020: ok, so I started building them already. Patience is not one of my virtues.

Progress:

Gravel

Slate
Sand

Activated Charcoal
Soilless mix (coconut coir, perlite)

19th September 2020: The results!

The four plants in here are polka dot plant, two nerve plants, baby's tears.

Can't quite see the 4th (emerald ripple peperomia), big-assed polka dot plant, nerve plant, baby's tears.

Both jars have a layer of sphagnum moss around and in between the plants. I'm gonna let them acclimate, get the water balance right, and then this next week some of the accessories should arrive (or the bits to create the accessories, and then I'll make the accessories).

This was a LOT of fun to do!
